About
Practicing Theology is a site for those in their 20s who still believe theology is relevant. I am sure we can all agree that life with God can be challenging at times. But the reasons for this are not simple to explain. I think that the more we know about God, the closer we get to him with the result that some areas of life with him are a little easier to handle. This is why what we know "or think" about God is very important. The video above was an excerpt from a message that Dr. Jeffrey Bingham from Dallas Theological Seminary preached. His main point about what we think about God affecting every area of our lives forms the basis of why this site is called practicing theology.
You see, theology really is the most practical thing about you because what you know shows up in how you relate to God and others. That being said, my goal is to help people think deeply about theology but not just have that information remain in their heads. It needs to be reflected in their lifestyles. I do believe that there is a large segment of church-going people who never read their Bibles or study theology. Dick Staub who wrote, "The Culturally Savvy Christian" had the following to say about the state of Christianity today:
Barna’s research also indicates troubling trends in behavior among the "born-again population," including a higher divorce rate than the general population and patterns of consumerism matching the general population. Evangelicals condemn abortion and sexual immorality but are relatively silent about the accumulation of wealth and concerns for the poor.
It is my opinion that part of what contributes to this situation is a lack of emphasizing solid theology, especially among the 18-24 age group. This group is the most unreached in this country. A lot of churches have no idea what to do with them. Most non-college town churches don’t have a means of targeting them and those that do, few of them are effective at reaching this group. So this is why this site exists. I want to help young people better understand theology, fall in love with it, and live it out in order to fulfill God’s command to love him and our neighbor (Matt 22:34-40).
About Me
I have a Masters of Theology (ThM) from Dallas Theological Seminary. I think they paid me to leave. I attend a new church plant in Allen, Texas called One where I am the web developer for the website. I also write discipleship curriculum there as well. When I am not doing church stuff, I am spending time discipling college-age guys and hanging out with them as much as I can. I love technology and am at this time infatuated with the whole Microsoft/Apple/Google battle for world domination. I spend any spare time reading tech blogs and studying theology. My favorite food is anything edible and deep fried (ha!). My favorite sport to watch is college football. I graduated from Texas A&M in December ’99. Whoop!!!!
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy the site. Your feedback is welcome.
Gig’em,
Robert Johnson
