Wow...this is crazy...I was just discussing this SAME topic with some new friends just recently. After searching the Bible out for God's view of natural or catastrophic disasters, I drew 2 conclusions:
1. We, as humans, are not to look at these catastrophes and claim that it was because of sin or try to figure out why God allowed or caused it. See Luke 15 and the whole book of Job.
2. If there is a direct connection to God's judgment on sin or sinners, then it goes back God's judgment on Adam, Eve, Satan, and all creation after Adam and Eve sinned. We now live in a fallen world with sin and death and decay. Some consequences humans suffer are due to their own sin, so things we suffer are due to living in a sinful world.

I'm totally willing to re-look at this again if someone can offer a more biblical view.

Agreed. He does more damage to the faith than non-believers. A philosophy professor I ride with and consider a friend picked this up and posted it to his facebook page shortly after the comment was made. Words like "crazy", "fundamentalist", and "unbelievable, how could he say something like that" followed as usual. We all remember his comments on 9-11 so this shouldn't be too much of a surprise but you still hate to hear it. Although I believe in the fundamental teachings of the Bible, I can't label myself as a fundamentalist because of guys like this.
