BitBits – Gays, Francis Chan and First Church of Facebook

April 27, 2010 in Blog View Comments

I am trying out a new feature he on the blog called BitBits. It’s basically a collection of articles from around the web I find interesting and relevant to the topic of practical theology. If you find any articles you think are interesting, let me know and I will add them in a future BitBits.

Jennifer Knapp is Gay…and Christian? - She was an extremely popular Christian artist at one point and now she says she is gay. This has opened up a firestorm of a debate on the homosexual Christian issue. Denny Burk takes some issue with her here and has a video of her appearance on Larry King. Trevin Wax has a great post on why Christians always lose the “gay” debate and offers a solution. Read reactions to all this on Christianity Today.

Francis Chan is leaving his church - I can’t say that I’m too surprised about this. In retrospect it seems like this was a long time coming. Whenever I have heard him speak lately it seems as though he was struggling with church as we know it. Get the relevant bit here.

Facebook Church - WOW. This is…WOW. See for yourself.

I love theology and the challenge of making deep teachings non-boring. Let's face it, most of the time we hear theological teaching, it really is boring. Does it really have to be that way? Nope.

Whoa....just watched the Francis Chan vimeo...wow. "I would be hypocritical if I didn't go..." Man...I'm so touched by what he had to say and more so by what he is doing. So often we have many willing to teach the truth, but when it comes time for the rubber to meet the road, they hit the brakes and stay put. Why can't there be more Godly leaders like him?

If only Christians acted like Christians...they wouldn't even join the military.

The article by Trevin Wax had some good points and was eloquently written. My heart goes out to Jennifer Knapp, but even more to those who she claims are giving her spiritual counsel.

I'm saying that I wish the military saw christians as a threat to their mission in the same way that they see gays as a threat to their mission.

Its sad that by announcing that she is gay, Knapp has disqualified herself from service in the US military, but coming out as a christian doesn't achieve the same goal.

I don't suppose I understand what you are saying. Are you saying that she should be disqualified from Christian service?

    That'll be the day.
